IOC World List 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Possibly the most requested feature from BUBO Listers has been to support the IOC World List as well as Clements. We're pleased to say that the IOC list is now here!

This has taken quite some effort, particularly as we have tried to maintain a mapping between the IOC and Clements taxonomies, so that it is relatively easy for someone who already has their list using Clements to create one using IOC. You can therefore copy your existing Clements list to a new IOC one and expect 90% or more of species to be automatically copied for you. There are several taxonomic differences though which you will need to add yourself, and of course many new species on IOC taxonomy that might give you plenty of "armchair" ticks.

I'm already working my way through finding out how many new species I can add using IOC - it's quite fun pulling out a few field guides for range and identification information and digging out old bird records! Hope to see lots more people creating their IOC lists and doing the same soon. I personally feel the IOC list will become more popular than Clements amongst listers, particularly those based outside the Americas where there is typically more divergence between Clements and the recognised regional or local authorities.

Well done lads - a mammoth task! Look forward to transferring from Clements fairly soon.

I have just finished working through the Clements to IOC conversion. In the process I gained 85 species cf Clements, and about 60 of these I had no idea about; I thought Hepatic Tanager would have become two but it has become three, and none of them called Highland Hepatic which took some working out.

On the down side Orange-bellied Trogon has vanished (into Collared Trogon??) and so has Lesser Redpoll (which Clements keeps changing anyway).

OK, I think all of the updates for version 2.6 of the IOC world list should now be incorporated. However, this is a complicated process so please let me know ASAP if you see any problems.

For new IOC world listers, there should be no problems. For existing IOC world listers, you may need to deal with any of the new splits and lumps. If so, in My Lists you'll see your IOC list is highlighted in yellow. Select this, and batch edit, then click on the "one bird to two birds" split icon and follow the instructions.

Cheers

Hi all - have now incorporated the version 2.8 updates onto the IOC World List. In summary, as well as a few changes to names, the updates:

Split Barolo and Boyd's Shearwaters,
Lump Western and Eastern Great Egrets,
Lump Imperial and King Shags, but then also split out South Georgia, Antarctic, Heard Island, Crozet and Macquerie Shags [***see below***],
Split Curve-winged and Wedge-tailed Sabrewings,
Lump Serra and Restinga Antwrens,
Split Arctic, Kamchatka Leaf and Japanese Leaf Warblers,
Split Stripe-headed, Grey-striped, Colombian, Phelps' Brush, Grey-browed, Buffy-flanked and Venezuelan Brush Finches.

If these splits and lumps affect your list at all, you should get prompted to address the changes (which you can do by going to My Lists, selecting your IOC list(s), click Batch Edit and then click the split/lump icon on the top right of the list). Further information on the procedure by clicking here

Please let us know if you see any problems arising from these changes.

Thanks

Andy

***Note that because the simultaneous lumping and splitting of these shags is complex to deal with, for those people who already had both Imperial and King Shags, I have manually done the lumping step for you - you will just be invited to process any potential splits. Again, let me know if you find any problems***
