AERC Western Palearctic List
The Association of European Rarities Committees (AERC) has provided a good ‘official’ list of birds of the Western Palearctic. Unfortunately, the taxonomic recommendations on the AERC website have not been updated since 2003. However, the body is apparently still active, with a new taxonomic document currently in preparation. A new draft AERC list has been made available to BUBO Listing but remains to be published officially.
The new additions and splits have been incorporated into the AERC base-list used by BUBO but have been flagged as provisional for the time being. Some of the key updates include the splitting of Canada Goose Branta canadensis/hutchinsii, Common Scoter Melanitta nigra/americana, Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca/deglandi, Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea/edwardsii, Carrion Crow Corvus corone/cornix and Eurasian Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula/murina, and the addition of some extralimital species such as Pacific Diver Gavia pacifica, American Woodcock Scolopax minor, Relict Gull Larus relictus, Forest Wagtail Dendronanthus indicus, White-eyed Vireo Vireo griseus, etc. Additionally, a number of new introduced species are now considered as established in the region, included Nanday Parakeet Nandayus nenday, Vinous-throated Parrotbill Paradoxornis webbianus and Yellow-crowned Bishop Euplectes afer.
The geographical limits considered by AERC are as defined by the nine-volume Birds of the Western Palearctic - basically Europe, North Africa and a block of the Middle East roughly south and east to Kuwait, but not including Iran nor anywhere east of the Urals and Caspian Sea. For more precise definitions, see BWP.
If you have no strong opinions on list authorities for Western Palearctic listing, it is recommended that this is the one you use. Species currently considered as comprising the AERC List for BUBO Listing purposes are shown below.
