American Ornithologists' Union (North and Middle American Birds)
The American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) is "the oldest and largest organization in the New World devoted to the scientific study of birds". The AOU maintains a checklist of North and Middle American Birds for which updates are regularly published.
The geographic area covered includes North and Central America from the boundary of Panama and Colombia northwards and including Hawaii, Bermuda and the West Indies. It is thus significantly larger than the area covered by the ABA list.
The most recent update was the 48th supplement published in The Auk, Vol 124, pp1109-1115 (2007). The most significant changes introduced here were the addition of Ringed Storm-petrel Oceanodroma hornbyi, Intermediate Egret Mesophoyx intermedia and Red-footed Falcon Falco vespertinus, the decision to split Bean Goose into two species, Taiga Bean-Goose Anser fabalis and Tundra Bean-Goose Anser serrirostris, and the decision to split Black Hawk into two species, Common Black-Hawk Buteogallus anthracinus and Cuban Black-Hawk Buteogallus gundlachii.
