normal Turkish Bird Checkist on BUBO Listing

5 years 6 months ago #1099 by Kuzey Cem Kulaçoğlu

I am a Turkish birdwatcher and twitcher. I came to BUBO Listing to share my Turkish tick list with others, but later I found out that a Turkish Bird List does not exist. It is actually quite normal, as there is no official records/rarities committee in Turkey, and there is no certain list to use.

However is it all possible to just make symbolic list, just to keep me and other Turkish bird watcher who is/will be a member of BUBO listing busy? Because if that is possible, I can find the most reliable Turkish checklist I can find, or maybe even make one myself that most people will agree.

So far I'm using the WP list; but as all my ticks are from Turkey, the total number of species I've observed in 2 years (since I started birding) is really low when compared with total number of species on the WP list (about %25).

Thank you for your help :)

Hi Kuzey

As you will realise, we've been struggling to keep up with adding new lists! Turkey is though the most requested list by our users so I'll see if I can add this within a few days. I'll use a Turkey list from Avibase which is generally the best option when no official list is available.

First of all, thank you for your quick response!

I am very pleased to hear that; however I've just checked the AviBase list and there seems to be c.20 extra species that normally shouldn't be on the list (Canada Goose, Caucasian Snowcock, White-tailed Tropicbird, Solitary Snipe for instance).

The KuşBank (Birdbank; a bank of bird data on Turkey) list is much more reliable, with only 472 species (maybe more with a few taxonomical splits).

However, I'd be happy with any Turkish list :)

Whilst we like to support Avibase because it is regularly updated there is no information about the source of particular species and we do often find several mistakes like this. We can look to use the KuşBank list instead, which I presume is reasonably accurate and updated since it is used via World Birds . However, is it possible for you to get a copy of it electronically, preferably in spreadsheet format with English and scientific names? The first species I noticed was Cory's Shearwater, which the website via Google translated into "Boz minute hand", which doesn't seem very helpful :-)

Well I can send it as a table if that's what you mean :) Would you like me to send it here ? :)

Hi all.

Any joy with a list for Turkey yet as I'm unable to find one using 'Create New List'? I've got my 1990 dog-eared paper list to hand, would love to get it on BUBO...

Unfortunately not James, I think we'll stick to using the Avibase list. Won't happen for a while though - which I'm sure you can cope with if your records are 24 years old :-)

Thanks for that Mike, I'll try Avibase and maybe import the list to Bubo...

Any news about the Turkish List?

4 years 6 months ago #1185 by Mike Prince
No unfortunately not: we never got a copy of the "official" Turkish list. At the moment due to lack of time on our part we are not introducing new lists, but instead concentrating on maintaining the most popular ones. Sorry about that.

I already have made a Turkish List for BUBO based on IOC 4.3, however I want to get it accepted by several people first, as I think it would be wrong to post it just by myself.

However, I will send you a copy of it now, just so there can be a Turkish List on BUBO. On any further update I will let you know.

Cheers, Kuzey.

Black-throated Accentor / Prunella atrogularis / Kara Boğazlı Dağbülbülü

should be added to the list as one got ringed and photographed today.

Hi, some late updates:

1) IOC has split the Purple Swamphen-complex into 4 species. Out of these, Western and Grey-headed Swamphen have occurred in Turkey. Western is a vagrant with one record and Grey-headed is a local breeder.

Sazhorozu - Porphyrio porphyrio - Purple Swamphen
should be changed to
Batı Sazhorozu - Porphyrio porphyrio - Western Swamphen (bold as it is rare)
Sazhorozu - Porphyrio poliocephalus - Grey-headed Swamphen

2) This year two new species has been added to the Turkish list. These are obviously rare and need to be bold.
Cambaz Kartal - Terathopius ecaudatus - Bateleur
Sazak Mukallidi - Iduna rama - Syke's Warbler

3) Black-throated Accentor, already in the list, should be bold.

Have done the last three, and will sort out the Swamphens within the next couple of weeks when we apply the latest IOC updates.
